The Støry
This project focused on two side-by-side spaces with tricky layouts: a laundry room and an underutilized nook at the top of the stairs. Both areas were impacted by an angled wall, which made functionality and flow a challenge.
In the laundry room, our client wanted to keep her existing washer and dryer but make them more practical for everyday use. The original cabinetry took up a lot of room, yet there was still no good place to store taller items. She also needed a better system for folding, sorting, and hanging clothes.
In the nook, the awkward angled wall made the layout hard to work with, so the space ended up going unused. Our goal was to make the most of every inch in both spaces.
The Design
The design was guided by our client’s love of French Country style, blending its charm with a more updated, everyday living approach. In the laundry room, the washer and dryer were raised and enclosed, creating more counter space and a cleaner, more organized workflow. Built-ins with fully extending drawers make smaller items and cleaning products easy to access, while open sections store larger items like vacuums and steamers.
We created an “all-in-one” laundry station by mounting a rod under a floating shelf, adding counter space below, and tucking rolling laundry hampers underneath. A peg rail wraps around the room, offering plenty of hanging spots for clothes, towels, and baskets. Aged brass hardware inroduces subtle shine throughout, a mini vintage-inspired gallery wall brings in character, and a woven shade adds warmth and texture to the space.
In the nook, the angled wall now features built-in shelving that makes the most of the sloped space, perfect for books, décor, and personal touches. On the opposite wall, floating glass vases bring life and personality, while an accent chair and rug create the perfect spot for reading or relaxing.
Instead of leaving the angled wall unused, we designed the space to make every inch purposeful. What was once an empty corner is now a welcoming nook that seamlessly complements the warmth and style of the rest of the home.
