Decorating With The Seasons

My Approach to Coloring with the Weather

I found myself saying this quite a few times and realized that maybe people don’t quite get what I’m saying or visualize it as I do. So, I am here to explain this internal philosophy I have when I approach home decor.. at least my home.

As long as I can remember, I’ve been mesmerized with colors. They make me feel incredibly happy inside and the more a color divides itself further and further, the happier I get. I associate colors with feelings to the point where I use them in harmony with describing scenarios. I feel the ocean’s depths with the darkest blues, I feel yellow when I’m happiest or green when I’m most zen.. you get the point.

So it goes without saying that when I approach my personal home decor, I strive for a color pattern and I get my inspiration from the seasons. Items I change would vary from throw pillow covers, table centerpieces, candles, flower arrangements and small decorating nic-nacs.

Winter is the coldest and coziest so I tend to go with colder tones: blues, purples and even deep reds. I also love highlighting with whites during that season.

Spring season is just so beautifully serene, with everything starting to bloom I can’t help but feel blush. Blushing colors favor a pastel flavor for me. Pastel pinks, yellows, oranges.. think a fluffy Easter.

Summer is so hot and dry in California. This calls for some popping colors.. I tend to associate heat with warmer colors such as yellows, yellow-ochres, warm reds, warm greens but truly anything goes. This is the time to just have fun with your home.. like how fun is a watermelon?! Think THAT but the decor version.

Then comes almost everyone’s favorite time of year and my personal favorite season: fall! It’s a pretty quick season in California, transitioning from extreme heat to sudden drops in temperature so I typically end my summer with warmer oranges that play well with the fall colors. Fall is full of natural beauty and I love accentuating those natural tones inside the home as well. Browns, beiges, burnt umbers, warm whites are the name of the game. To add slight pops, I add greens to bring down the “temperature” of my decor.

There you have it! Your home can easily change feelings and styles with the seasons; these changes can be subtle but the rewards are so worth the work. Giving your home simple face lifts every few months rejuvenates an inner sense of peace and joy. You also don’t need to splurge every season, allocating a small amount of your budget for one or two items goes a long way. Before you know it, every season you have more to choose from and play around with.
